September 26, 1949 - USS Coral Sea arrives Norfolk after completing her first MED Cruise.
September 26, 1949 - The ship starts a six month yard period for CVB Improvement Program Number One. The forward and aft ends of the flight deck were strengthened to operate jet and heavy attack aircraft, blast deflectors were installed behind the catapults,and the ship was equipped with nylon crash barriers.
