Comments: My first deployment straight out of A School for HS-3 Helicopter Squadron based out of Imperial Beach, California. Got a late start to reach the Carrier, she was already in Yankee Station. Flew into Clark Air Force Base, scary bus trip down the mountain roads to Subic Bay, Philippines. Ship got extended on station so I was flown out on a C1 Cod. Had the experience of both landing and being catapulted of the ship. Great memories of the ship, squadron and crews. Was a Flight Deck troubleshooter as an Aircraft Electrician. Loved it... |

Comments: I was aboard for the 72-73 westpac cruise and it was a brutal one, lots of 6 and 6 watches in 2-Baker fireroom, we didn't know whether or not it was day or night and I had dreams about steam gauges, we were led by an extraordinary first class named Bob Parks, he taught a scared 18 year old how to steam a boiler, but also to be a man, just want to say greeting to him and his family, and to all the great friends I can never forget, Jonny Espiritu, Philippe Coili, (forgive my spelling...40 years and all) Gene Weisbeck, Jim "Smitty" Smith, I could go on, blessing of the grandfather spirit to you all and all my Coral Sea shipmates, happy christmas and a joyous new year. |

My Father served in the US Navy in 1958-1961 and aboard the USS CORAL SEA for a year or so. His Name is Davis Anthony Bovee and was a FN. He was in the A division and was in the 02 gang handling JP5 Jet Fuel. He was a machinist striker also. On his headstone provided by the US Navy shows the letters FA. Anyways my Mother and bride of 49 years before he passed asked that I, David Bovee's ONLY son to see and inquire if anyone who is on the USS CORAL SEA may have known him. His friend he hung out with was LDS (Mormon) and we as a Family would like to reach out to him if he's still around. I hope and pray anyone can send information to me so I can get it to my Mom. On weekends you and I would ride all weekend around San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, up in the hills, just to forget all that was going on. I enjoyed all the trips we made. Comments: Went to the annual reunion in Dago. toured the Midway, did the zoo,etc. Holey crap, Broadway is now a respectable street full of new office buildings, shops. Not a hooker, stripper or arcade in sight, bummer. Still all in all it was cool to see what can happen to a town in fifty years.
Most of the people I met were snips and the occasional black shoe, very few airdales. I was greatly surprised to see how narrow the ladders had become over the years, not to mention steep.
I won't be going to the next national reunion, if I want to go someplace hot and humid I'll go back to the Tonkin Gulf. |

Comments: For those shipmates that have been requesting information as to VA Claims for exposure to Agent Orange and the classification of the USS Coral Sea as a 'brown water' ship, I have found the entries in the Deck Logs that show the ship entered Da Nang Harbor on January 28, 1969. Copies of the Deck Logs can be found on another Coral Sea Site ("www.usscoralsea.net"). I will be supplying copies of the Deck Logs to the VA for my claim along with other agencies involved in re-classifying the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) as a 'brown water navy' vessel during this time frame. Whether or not they accept this documentation is not clear at this time. |

The ff. year,1983 during the world cruise..together with a few of my shipmates we participated at "The Ditch Run" as our ship was crossing the Suez Canal(June 83)an unforgettable experience I will treasure forever. He is a distant relative of mine who applied for benefits a while ago, but was denied because he couldn't prove boots on the ground in Vietnam. Lester died about a month ago of prostate cancer. Comments: I was on the Gonzo cruise of '79-80, a plane captain working nights. The night we left Subic an A7 crashed trying to land. It was my assigned plane that night. Bird to the bottom, pilot fished out. I stood there watching it come in and I remember that point when I knew he wasn't going to make it. There was no time to do anything, we were lucky it didn't come out way. Would anyone out there have any record of this? I know about the archives and am working on that but just thought I would throw it out here too. |

Comments: My father, Albert Edward Horsman was on this ship during the Korean War. That is all I know about his Navy days. He didnt talk to us about his time in the service. Now he cant because he is suffering from Alzheimers Disease. He is 80 years old and I think he would have served on this ship in the early to mid 50's. Not sure if anyone on here would know him, but if they know anything about this time on the ship, I would love to learn about it and maybe what he was doing while serving our country. I am a member of the Benevolent Order of Elks and we assist veterans. I was feeling left out not knowing anything about my father's time served. Comments: There are 2 bills in Congress right now that are stuck in Committee. One in the Senate and one in the House. Both bill have sufficient support/co-sponsors to pass. These bills would extend the Brown Water category to all Aircraft Carriers that served in the Tonkin Gulf during the Vietnam War. Senate Bill S.681 and House Bill HR689. Call your representatives and to get these bills out of committee and voted on.
Also, The USS Coral Sea entered and anchored in Da Nang Harbor sometime during the 1969-1970 Westpac cruise. Anyone with the dates of this activity please contact me via email. (Activity was to off-load helo's that were inoperable). |

Comments: Need to find out how close the Coral Sea got to the shore of VietNam. Any of you helmsmen know? They sure make it hard for us blue water guys to get compensation for agent orange. My service officer says if I can find someone to verify that we had those kind of chemicals aboard ship or close to shore, or contaminated air craft, it would be proof enough. I now have diabetes and no history of it in my family.
Perhaps with every one contributing, we can get our proof. |

Comments: For Illinois vets receiving disability Illinois has passed a new law for property tax deductions for Disabled Vets. Under the new law the property taxes you pay could be reduced more, even down to zero if your disability is high enough. Comments: Regarding Joseph Montoya's request for noncombat deaths aboard, my husband was aware of "AA Norman E. Ridley who was fatally injured while pulling a fuel hose across the bow of the flight deck. He was struck by the wing of an F-4B which was being launched from the port catapult." Comments: My husband, Harry James French, served aboard the Coral Sea during the years of 1969-1970. During that time, on or about Feb 28, 1970, he and some other crew members were pulled off the ship and sent to Saigon to trouble shoot the A6 Intruders that were grounded by CINCPACFLT due to an excessive number of air failures. He was sent in with 2 helpers. I am looking for anyone who can verify that this happened and perhaps someone who knew my husband. Harry passed away 12/20/15 and I am sorry that he was never able to attend any of the ship reunions as his health would not allow. |

Comments: Both my sons had to have aortic valves replaced at ages 28 and 39 . No history of this defect in either mine of my wife's side of the family. We don't know what we were exposed to!, All kinds of chemicals were used on the ship that we knew nothing about. Saying hello to Greg Hawke (4 Charliie) stood control burners with him many times. |
