Comments: Just wanted to make another comment. While I was visiting my parents in McDonough, GA, I happened to look up and see a crawler from FOX news that CAG-15, Commander Dunlop's body had been found in Vietnam and returned to the US for burial. I don't know if his BN was ever found. His Bombardier/Navigator was Capt. David B. Williams and they were flying one of our A-6's. When we got stateside I bought a POW/MIA bracelet from Capt. Williams' wife and wore it every day until it cracked so I put it up to forever remember CAG-15 and Capt. Williams. I served aboard the Coral Sea during the westpac cruise of '71 - '72 with Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 224 out of Cherry Point, NC. I made Sgt. (E-5) during the cruise. I also remember laying aerial mines on Haiphong Harbor and hearing of the sinking of the Russian frigate in the harbor which brought SECNAV aboard the ship. I also remember when Major Clyde Smith was shot down in one of our A-6's. He finally got picked up and returned to the Coral Sea. There was a History Channel interview with Major Smith that I happened to see a few years ago. Also, if anyone remembers, there was a Reader's Digest article about our mining of Haiphong harbor which came out sometime in late 1972. I have that article somewhere, but cannot prenently find it. Anyone remember the SOS (Stop Our Ship) movement that took place during our cruise? I thought it was pure BS. I cannot believe it was over forty years ago that we sailed into the history books. I still have my cruise book and salute all the members of our ship. I remember VA 94, VA 22, which flew the A-7's, VF 151 and VF 111, which flew the F-4 Phantoms. I also remember VAQ 135 and the lessor squadrons that only had 1 or 2 planes in them. I'm now 64 or will be in Jan. 2015. My, my, my how time flies by. |

Comments: Daniel L. Johnson , I was on board when you were and you were right on for some of the happenings. Yes the A-7 was coming in to low and it sheared off it's landing gear and the pilot did eject sideways into his chute. He did get tangled in it and drowned. The helo spotted and retrieved the body the next morning and they placed the body in the walk-in cooler that held the milk and stuff. I was working in Pri-Fly and I took care of the flight deck lights. One time at sea the red lights on the back of the carrier which helped the pilots line up for the landing burned out. I had to go over the side while at sea and change the bulbs but first I had to get permission from the bridge so they could tell the fan tail watch taht I was not commiting suicide but fixing the lights. And you were correct on that fella jumping off the ship when we were leaving Subic Bay he was in E division and I don't remember his name but that Filipino gal put something on him and he fell in love with it. He jumped close to Grandy Island (not sure of the spelling) and was swimming to shoare. They launched the rescue helo and the rescue swimmer had to chase the guy as he kept swimming away from the rescue swimmer. Daniel do you remember one night about 0130 hours when general quarters sounded and they said it was not a drill. The scuttle butt had that a missile was shot at the Coral Sea from somewhere and it was about a foot off the water when one of the escorts picked it up and the ship turned hard (very hard) to port and went to flank speed. The old girl listed and I do believe that one could have laid on the flight deck and slapped the water on that turn and the old girl was shaking getting up to flank speed but she hauled ass. |

Comments: Hi, for all that were in Nashville, I just wanted to post that I am doing well after the fall in the Holiday Inn parking lot and breaking my hip. Doc screwed me back together and I am on my way to full recovery. It has been 2 months since surgery and I am walking so it won't be too long before this incident will just be a memory. Thanks to all my shipmates that have checked on my recovery process and helped my wife Sandy with arrangements that had been made previously. |

Comments: My Dad had many great stories about his time on the Coral Sea. He Past on 3/1/13 at age 82 and right up till the end we could always get him to crack a smile when talking about his time on board. He was so proud of his ship and the crew and officers he served with. He took care of keeping most if not all of the air conditioning and refrigeration functioning on the ship and occasionally when checking the Captains AC unit in his quarters would catch a glimpse of some TV (the only one on board) or some photos of the ship from the photo lab and even an extra scoop of ice cream from the mess. Even though she is long gone she remains "The Ageless Warrior" in the minds of so many including my Dad. My sincerest regards to all who served. His son Steven |

Comments: I just wanted to add that I met some of the crew back in 1988, I believe it was, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I was given a tour of your beautiful ship and she was very impressive. The only other Aircraft Carrier I was ever on was Canada's last Carrier, The HMCS Bonaventure, affectionately known as The "Bonnie". I remember when The Coral Sea was docking at pier 28 I believe and her flight deck hit the top of the storage building. We all had a good laugh. Thanks to the crew for showing me around. |

Comments: I served aboard the Coral Sea in 69-70 and have a question for any crew member separated while the ship was at Hunters Point. The records facility in St.Louis does not have any medical records for my service period and can offer no explanation where they might be. I believe medical and service records might have been removed from the ship while in dry dock and stored ashore in Hunters Point. I separated very soon after arrival from the 69-70 West Pac. If any crew member attached to Medical during this time period does in fact know records were not kept aboard ship during this time frame please contact me. If any former crew member has had problems with lost medical or service records please contact me at RJW4750@yahoo.com Thanks for everyones service! |

Comments: Hi everyone I am still a Boiler Operator one of the last still operating boilers. I am looking for A school training material because there are no more BT's left. And these boys are just stupid. We have to start from scratch and with our work load as A Boiler operator/Mechanic there is no time to hold their hand. I need a self pace BT A School course so I can some how teach these kids something. We are already short handed so on the job training is not working. These kids have no mechanical experience. I would appreciate any help to set up a course to train the unmaintainable to become Boiler Operators. The schools here just take their money and teach them nothing they can use. The rating is dieing and boiler Operators cannot be found unless they are over 50 years old. So if anyone has practical useable ideas please send me a email. |

Comments: I was a Corpsman on board from when we left San Francisco for the 83 World Cruise (Shellback experience) through the dry dock in Portsmouth, VA, and discharged just after returning from the collision with the Ecuadorian tanker ship Napo. What some days to remember. The World Cruise was AWESOME! I sure miss it, all the friends/shipmates and hated to see her scrapped. I got to visit the USS Midway (docked as a museum) in San Diego in 2010 and she really brought back some memories. Would like to hear from anyone in the Medical Department or any of the other friends I made on the USS Coral Sea. |

Comments: I was going through a drawer and I found the booklet my grandpa recived when he got on the Coral Sea, "A Good Ship is a Happy Ship." I loved hearing him talking about his time in the Navy on the Coral Sea. He used to say it was like a floating city. I can remember being little and refering to it as a boat and he was quick to correct me saying, no, that's a ship. I remember the day he found out that the Coral Sea was being scrapped and how sad it made him. He had many happy memories on that ship. He's been gone 3 years now.I miss him and his stories about the city on the sea. I wish it was him signing this guestbook with his fellow shipmates, but I just thought I would do it in his honor. |

Comments: Hello shipmates. From NAMTRAGRU Memphis headquarters in Dec. '63 to NAS Alameda, I had to await the ship's return to CONUS in '64. 1st billet: G-Div Tool Room PO, port catwalk 02 level; 2nd billet: G Truck Repair PO, hangar bay 1, portside cage; 3rd billet: G Forward Mags PO; 4th billet: X-MAA Linen Locker PO & CPO Berthing PPO. Our G-Div. 4-piece band played periodically for the wardroom, enlisted mess, beach parties, & almost every night while in port at Hong Kong. We kept our instruments stored in our assigned "band room" which was on the starboard aft gun-sponson. One of the band's most-enjoyable gigs was on a Saturday night when we played for a 3-hr. teen party while in port Subic Bay. We frequently had adequate volunteer working parties to assist with instrument/stage set-ups, etc. I converted to AZ while aboard & retired as AZCS at AIMD Jax, Jan 1981. I would enjoy hearing from any shipmates. I'm glad I found this web site & am looking forward to attending the 2014 reunion in Nashville, if possible. |

Each aircraft ( Three A-6A's and 6 A-7E's) were used to block the entrance. (4 mines apiece)Myself, Roland Puscher MN3 and Tim mercier MNSN were the only Mineman aboard. Comments: George, They were called Irish Pennants when I went through boot camp in 1959. That's the only thing we called them. I made the 60-61 cruise on the Coral Maru with VAH2 out of Whidbey Island, Wa. Just before that cruise was over, I got orders to ships company and made the next far east cruise in X division. That was a loooooooong time ago wasn't it? Regards,
Darwin "Hap" Litzell PN3 P.S. Drop a line if you like. Always glad to hear from a shipmate. My email is: mrhap1@cltcomm.net |

Comments: Q. For old Recruits only. Who can remember for sure what the left over ends of clothes stops (max 1/2") were called after tying garments on line to dry ? I've heard Tie-Ties, Bitter ends, Irish Pennants from old mates. I'm not convinced any of these terms are valid. A useless bit of trivia I suppose.
Q. What is a clothes stop? A. A clothes stop is a small diameter cord about 12 inches long with metal ends to keep the cord from fraying. This short cord was used to tie laundry to a clothes line or other convenient object for drying. Every recruit was issued a length of clothes stops in boot camp instead of clothes pins. They ceased to be issued in 1973. |

Comments: Looking for any one who served aboard the Coral Sea during 1967-1971. While the ship was in the gulf of Tonkin. I worked in R division metal shop. I have had a claim with the VA for the last 10 years for the affects agent orange has had on me. I have had cancer of the larynx, cancer of the thyroid, high blood pressure, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis. And a few other problems associated with exposure to agent orange. All of my claims have been denied for lack of proof to the exposure to agent orange. I was also aboard the USS Askerie, It was a repair ship anchored on a river in Viet Nam. This was a temporary duty assignment. Was aboard this ship twice for maybe a week at a time. There is no record of my being aboard this ship. I have no idea why, Would like to hear from anyone who may have any problems from agent orange. I have just filed my last appeal with the VA on my claim. Thanks, Walt Sury... It was a Great ride. Miss the good times aboard |

Did 3 Westpac cruises with last taking us to Australia.Have always felt that the Navy allowed a 17 year old to grow up and be a man.Did my entire enlistment onboard which happen to be 43 months. I have a picture of CVA 43 going under the Golden Gate bridge that is 16"by36" and has 3 pictures of same inset that are pre angle deck period, one of the perks of being in "X" divison. |

Comments: When I go to the Madison Wi. VA Clinic, I always wear my Coral Sea hat. My dress hat! It never fails ...more than a few vets always comments on the Coral Sea and their involvement with HER!. It occured to me that they were talking to all of us that called HER home. Some served with, some near, but all had an association with her. The Coral Sea has left a legacy that can never deminish...makes one prouder to witness how she is remembered. Thanks again from all of us! |

Comments: Hello and Happy New Year to all my old shipmates! Only 17 years old at the time and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. Great time and terrific memories and I was lucky enough to make life long friends. Had the pleasure of getting together with them in 2009 at the Coral Sea reunion in Tampa, Florida. We hadn't seen each other at that time for almost 40 years and we all picked right up where we left off. Laughing and telling our sea stories (some of them were even true!) Hard to explain to those who never served the strong bond between shipmates. Great times, great memories great shipmates and proud to have served. God bless all those who have served and those who are now serving........Dave |

Rodney, Harry, Herbie, Smuck, Jerry, Hubert, Tompkins, Goose, Shitty Smitty, Clark, Wilkie, Moore, I could go on, but I would have to mention the whole Division. I did a lot of bouncing around after I got out. Back to upstate NY then AZ, CO, TN, CO, & then back to AZ. Which is where I am now. So if anyone is passing thru the Phoenix area try to get in touch. Wish there was a way to get together some day. It would be Monumental. I wish the Best for all of you this year. May your seas be calm, & a breeze at your back. |

I first went to the filter room, then the pump room, and the last couple years I was in flight deck control. Went on 2 West Pacs and was "shown the ropes" by the guys that were there before, thanks guys, gotta love the PI! Participated in the Iranian hostage deal and was at sea as I remember it 102 days or something like that, memory isn't the same as it once was. I do remember a lot of good times onboard and off while I was stationed on her. Still in touch with a couple shipmates yet, anyone else wanting to shoot the shit that remembers me, send me an email. Comments: Check in to the coral sea at 17 and was instantly educated by the members of the previous cruise...the best lesson they ever taught me was not to get caught and I learned that really good. Like I said before, I truly apologize to anyone that I might have offended by poking there whores or drinking their beer or smoking their weed, but only when they didn't share!!! But my real buddies didn't care. V4 lost a real wild man last year..Ron Frieburg...He showed me the ropes of not getting caught and sky diving..good man for sure. The flight deck is where the action was and I enjoyed ever bit of it. Made a lot of friends on the flight deck and from every div and squadron...helped lift bombs, chock planes, wipe my hands free of greases on the cat crew!!!.. and so much more. Made it to Iwakuni japan after the coral sea and then to Okinawa and then to Master jet base cecil field fla for a 2 year vaction ...went back to the coral sea in 77 and then out... Been living in Iowa ever since and running my business for over 30 years...finishing up driving a truck till I retire. Heres to the flight deck crews and squadrons of the 71 - 72 cruise |

Comments: In 2009 a large number of the guys who worked in the V-2 Division on Cat-3 came together at the Association reunion in Washington DC. This group consisted of individuals who served aboard the Coral Sea between the years of 1967-1971.As a group we made a promise to each other on the last day of the reunion, that we would come together again in 5 years. To this end, my goal is to make this happen and to expand the group to include all shipmates who served in the V-2 Division between the years of 1967-1971. This would encompass Cat. 1-2-3, AG and Plat. If you served in the V-2 Division during this time period and have some interest in coming together in Nashville, Tenn. the first week of October 2014 with some of your buddies please send me a e-mail. Even if you can't attend the 2014 reunion, I would still be happy to hear from you and I can share with you who I have heard from over the years. |

Comments: Continued: .........Sure enough there He was Swimming from the Port Side away from the Fantail and He Swam to a Small Boat with someone in it. I called to the Bridge for a Man Overboard, Port Side away from the Fantail. One of the Helicopters went out, Picked Him up out of the Boat and Brought Him back to the Ship.
Another Incident on the Fantail.....Main Deck.......A Person walked out from the Hanger Bay on to the Fantail.....the Fantail Watchman was there....this is in 3rd Division Cleaning Area and the Fantail Watchman is in Deck Department. The Person walked to the end of the Fantail by the Rails......the Watchman just turned away from that Person for just a brief turn and looked back for the Person Standing........He was GONE........NO WHERE on the Fantail......the Fantail Watchman had to call in to the Bridge for a Man Overboard at the Fantail.......This Person was NEVER FOUND.
WE were at WAR, the VIET NAM WAR.........At Sea WE have these incidents, Happenings.........some Good........some Bad. The United States Navy Trained us to be Perfect in OUR JOBS. WE ALL have the WAR of Imperfection. During the VIET NAM WAR We had to deal with that WAR.......then WE ALL have the WAR in OUR MINDS......We were worried about out Loved Ones at Home.......Will I get Home to see them??? Will My Wife or Girl Friend wait for me???.......these are thoughts that each one of us Had. OUR LIFE was NOT EASY........From 1947 to 1990 with ALL of OUR SHIPMATES....Remember the USS CORAL SEA CV,CVB,CVA-43 and NOW IN MEMORY........but STILL ALIVE!!! AHOY MATES......Have a GOOD YEAR of 2014!!! |

Comments: Of the Best Times of My Life was on the Coral Sea during the 1971-1972 Cruise and an Exciting Cruise at that. Being in Deck Department We were Ready for Anything with Our Life Boats and All. Liberty Ports were Good.....to Relax, to enjoy being with our Shipmates......but back to what WE were trained for.....BACK TO SEA. I remember coming back to San Francisco from San Diego after our REF Training before we went to WestPAC, there was a fire aboard Ship, two times was announced for the Fire and Repair Parties......then the third was General Quarters. I was a Yeoman for 3rd Division in Deck Department and I was in our Division Office which was on the Fantail, Second Deck below when all three Announcements were made. As soon as we heard the GONG,GONG,GONG of General Quarters........Man did we move.....went up to the Hanger Bay and Smoke was everywhere......got to My GQ Station, on the Sound Powered Phone I called to the Bridge saying that our Station is Manned and Ready. Our Training Payed-Off........our time for the whole Ship was Record Breaking. From our Cruisebook it stated that the whole Ship was ready in two minutes. What I heard at that time, there was a Electrical Short within the Island and it Sparked off with Fire. That Night everyones Adrenalin was still High.
One of the First Unfortunate Happenings was losing on of our A-7's and the Pilot. I don't know who the Pilot was but My understanding was that He came too low at the Fantail.....slid across the Flight Deck and went off the Port Side into the Sea.....at the time too He Ejected out. The Pilot was Found tangled up in His Chute Lines. As I mentioned before our Office in 3rd Division was on the Second Deck below at the Fantail. If the Pilot would have been lower than He did......We would've had more Casualties and Headed Back to Hunter's Point. Also........I wouldn't be telling You about this.
Another Time I was Assigned to the Bridge as My General Quarters Station on the Sound Powered Phone for Deck Department. I remember it was during Flight Ops and the Squadrons were doing a Touch and Go Flights. I was watching Captain Harris as He was watching an F-4 doing a Touch and Go from the Angle Deck. The F-4 Touched.........Started on the Go and Dropped from Sight.......Captain Harris was Sitting in His Chair.........Drew up His Legs and Feet............I think everyone on the Bridge was Holding Their Breath.......Then the F-4 came up in Sight Forward from the Bow. Captain Harris Quickly Said He wants to See the Pilot after He Lands.
During one of our UNREPS with the Uss Visuvious (sp) taking on Fuel. Our 3rd Division Fuel Station was on the Starboard Sponson near our Lifeboat. The Sea was really rough so we had to be careful as we hooked up. Again I'm on the Sound Powered Phones talking with the ones on the other Ship. My phone line was reaching over the water.....Ship to Ship. Well a coulple of times Both of the Ships seemed to be moving away from each other and My phone line was to the Max. Fuel Lines about to disconnect........and it Happened......Fuel Lines Disconnected, the Ships Moving Away.........My Phone Lines Pulled Away before I was able to disconnect and there Goes My Phone Line with the Head Phone and Breast Plate Completely Yanked OFF My Head and from My Life Vest.....into the Ocean. I wore Glasses too.......Yes they went into the Ocean too.........I am so Glad that we were Trained NOT to use the Neck Strap with those Phones During Refueling or Taking on Cargo...........What I understand that Caused all of this Happening.......was that the Forward GYRO stopped working.
When we were Pulling out of Subic Bay for another Line Period, I was on the Fantail for the Sea and Anchor Detail, and Yes Again I'm on the Sound Powered Phone connected to the Bridge. Everything was going Good.......All of a Sudden a few People come Running Out from the Hanger Bay telling me that someone Jumped off the Ship....... |

Comments: Well It's been about 4 years ago when I last signed in. My old E-mail address was Busman12......I've changed it. I just wanted to try to sign in before anyone else for 2014 and looks like I did. Anyways in a day or two I have some stories to tell....but not right now. Just wanted to update myself. Being in 3rd Division, Deck Department as Yeoman for the Division I have a lot of friends. Roy Maxwell and I have been communicating for some Years. Anyone from 3rd Division during 1971-1973 I sure would like to hear from them. Also too, anyone just from Deck Department. I'm going to be transfering a lot of Movies that I took of the Cruise and especially in 3rd Division most of everyone in the Division could be on them......When this project is done I want to share the copies with My Shipmates. So get in touch with me.....It will be great to hear from everyone. |
