If there is someone out there that did could you please write me a short note about him. My husband Mike was also in the Navy from 1968 to 72 on the USS Dickson and another ship but I can`t remember the name. I will keep this bracelet always. I hope I hear from someone. Comments: Dear friends

I found this website: www.icancall.com they offers "Free up to 70 mins" for International Calling for absolutely Free and no Purchase necessary. I have tried this product and it was amazing. I would like to share this experience with all of you who had a problem with Phone Card or Calling Card before.

Icancall.com is not like any other International Phone Card website or Prepaid Calling Card website. This is PINLESS DIALING & RECHARGEABLE Pins

The cool part is:

. You do not have to remember your PINS at all, it wil recognize your Phone Number immediately by dialing local access or toll free numbers provided by ICanCall.com (once you registered)
. The rates are low and quality much better than Phone Card or Calling Card
. You can share this Pins with your families or friends (Just add their number into your account)

Head down to Icancall.com and give it out a try - its FREE anyway what you got to lose.

Sincerely,
Jenny

Comments: Happy veteran's day to all Navy & Marine persons who served aboard CVA-43 through the years. On Nov. 12 1971 CVA-43 left California to head to the Gulf of Tonkin untill July of 1972. It was one busy cruise with the Eastertde invasion going on in the spring of 72. I think we had one 50 day line period through april into May. A book called "Fighting to Leave" is very good reading about that time period. It was quite an 8 month deployment for me.

Comments: It has been a while since I, have been on the cite. I was sad to learn that Captain Ferris had passed away, he was one great skipper. I remember when the Coral Maru was off the coast of N. Korea and we had not received any mail in about two weeks. Finally a COD landed with a small amount of mail. Capt. Ferris came on the PA system and said the Navy had found us and our mail. The captian made a cool statement he said "if you didn't get any mail don't feel bad he didn't get any either.

I was on board from 1967 until 1969 I worked in the AIMD Jet Shop with a great bunch of guys. I'm from Augusta, Ga. therefore; my nickname in the navy was PEACH. I am now retired and living in Roanoke, Va. I am tring to locate my best friend while I was on the Coral Sea. He was Marvin Booher, Quartermaster 3 (QM-3) his nickname was Lard. If any of our old shipmates know him or how to make contact with him please forward this message to him or his family. It would be great to hear from him or from his family. Also it would be great to hear from any of my old ship mates. I've also met another Coral Sea brother in Roanoke Va. His name is Harry French he was in an A-6 sqd. onboard from 1969 unit 1970.

This is a great wed site.

Comments: I just wanted to advise those of us that were on board when we escorted the first load of Helicopters to Vietnam without Congress approval. I had to have my US Senator write to the Dept of the Navy to get the Vietnam Expeditionary Medal along with a couple of other medals. More important they added a correction to my DD-214 A DD-215 which makes it offical we were the first forces involved in the Vietnam War. I would suggest if anyone else is interested in getting that fact added to their records and get the Medal that they go though their Senator. Have him write to DEPT OF THE NAVY Navy Personnel Command 5720 Integrity Drive Millington TN 38055-0000. He should have a copy of your DD-214 and he should ask for the Vietnam Expeditionary Medal and a corrected DD-214. This is all the information I have , so good luck.

Comments: I was one of the VA-82 A-7 pilots aboard Coral Sea during the combat cruise of '69-'70 and I want my shipmates to know about a book. In the last year, I authored one about the mission when I was shot down over Laos on 31 May 1968 and I had to evade Phatet Lao guerillas for 39 hours. My rescue by USAF Jolly Green helos wound up as the third or so largest of the Vietnam War and involved 189 sorties, seven planes lost or totally damaged beyond us, four pilot ejections, and, unfortunately, one of the USAF rescue pilots who was shot down was later captured, and he was a POW for over five years. The book is titled, "The Rescue of Streetcar 304"---A Navy Pilot's Forty Hours on the Run in Laos, and it was published by the Naval Institute Press. If you want to recapture the dynamics aboard a carrier flight deck, read the book. It's available in book stores and on-line at amazon.com, etc. in both hardback and paperback.

Comments: Lotta memories were packed into, what now appears to have been, a short period of time.
From the collapsed nose gear of an F4 while doing Carqual's off the California coast (the plane ultimatley flew by itself when the flight crew popped out and the afterburners kicked in); to the loss of shipmate Flores when he was overcome by toxic fumes from "xylene technical" while cleaning a 5" gun turret.
The firebug in San Diego that resulted in "GQ" early one Sunday morning in port; (The guy that started the fires wanted to delay ships movement so he could spend more time with his sweetie; he got major brig time in Leavenworth); GQ while in Yankee Station (Gulf of Tonkin) due to "race riot" situation on mess deck.
I also have a fond memory of the nights I was a "DJ" on the ships radio station "KYC-FM 90" from 1700-1900 while at sea. I had a great relationship with the Pilots and other Air-Wing guys; I'd play requests and make dedications for them and they'd record it, send it home and maybe I'd find a case of Coca-Cola, Lobster Tails, Steaks, etc. left outside the radio station door.
Like I said, lotsa memories for a kid that was 18 going on 35.

Brought back old memories and the stories I could tell that would not be believed unless you walked the walk and talked the talk. I am now 55 years old and a Master Chief in the Texas State Guard, 5th Air wing, Ellington AFB, Houston, Texas. In July 2008 I will be starting OCS in Austin at Camp Mayberry. Gess it never gets out of your system. I recieved from the Air Force in 2007 the Air Force Achievement award for my NCOIC at Convention Center in Houston for the Katrina/Rita evacuation in New Orleans. I was activated for 3 months. I am a Sergeant for the Harris County Sheriff's office in Houston, Texas. Just remember old skivey wavers never die they just go up the haliard.

McDade, James A. WYNANTSKILL James A. McDade, age 76, beloved husband of 54 years of Mary Higgins McDade, died on Sunday, June 22, 2008, at his residence. Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Cornelius and Margaret Hinnigan McDade. After graduating from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, he served in the U.S. Navy on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Coral Sea during the Korean War. After being discharged, Mr. McDade became a meat and poultry inspector for the U.S.D.A., transferring to the Capital District in 1959 and retiring in 1986. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by a son, James P. (Ginger) McDade of North Greenbush; two sisters, Margaret (John) Hayes of Wakefield, R.I. and Carol (Michael) Horan of Baldwin, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Ruth McDade of Oceanside, N.Y. and Ann Higgins of Wilmette, Ill.; three grandchildren, Mary Beth, Jimmy and Margaret McDade; two step-grandchildren, Michael Jennings and Zackary Malmberg; and many nieces and nephews, especially his beloved niece, Mary (Michael) Donovan of East Greenbush. Mr. McDade was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary Ann; two sisters, Elsie Gunning and Frances Jacobs; a brother, Cornelius McDade; and a brother-in-law, Thomas J. Higgins. The funeral will be from St. Jude the Apostle Church, 43 Brookside Ave, Wynantskill on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Salvatore Rodino, pastor. Burial will follow in the Gerald Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Rank/Rate: QM
Division/Squadron: N
Years Aboard: 60-662
Location: San Diego Ca usa
Comments: I reside in San Diego and I am currently involved in the Docent program on the USS Midway Museum. I was in the ships historical library today which has a lot of ships cruise logs especially of it's sister ship, the Coral Sea. The oldest log however only starts in 1957 and goes to 1960, then is missing 1961 and 1962 and continue from 1963 to decommissioning. I believe this location would be a great location to forever keep a complete set of logs for the Coral Sea. The libirary is not generally open to the public as is is extensivelyh used for research and history.
I would ask anyone that would like to donate any of their old logs, especially 61&62 to the library, it would greatly be appreciated.
Remember, this is a real libirary with everthing catalogued, kept on shelves and includes everything from old training manuals, blue jacket manuals, watch officer guides to magazines such as "All Hands" from it's conception. It has all the Janes Fighting ships to complex technical manuals on everything from the Cat system to the Arresting gear system. The ships restoration team loves getting books on anything about the engineering system and based on books in the library, recently refinished the radio room and are in the process of restoring CIC and most of the ready rooms. If you have any other books of interest, please consider donating them to the Libirary.
Remember, the Midway is a real muesuem and anyone who ever comes to San Diego and having served on the Coral Sea, have to put this on the MUST SEE things to do.
The docents on the Midway are made up from everyone who has not even been in the military to admirals, past CO's of other ships, alot of ships hands, pilots, etc. Most importantly, everyone is committed to making the docent corp work which it is thanks to alot of dedicated people.

Comments: I miss all the adventures and shipmates from my time on the Coral Sea.
I see our CWO had made LT after I departed.
I left the Coral Sea in Oct '70 because my father became seriously ill and I was able to be transfered to the East Coast (to a Tin Can).
Almost all of my things were sent to my new ship. Unfortunatly the one thing I miss that was NOT sent was my cruise book for '69-'70.
Is there anyone who has one and can tell me the printer so I can beg for a reprint or someone who would let me look at thiers for one day?
Thank You and Good Health to one and ALL

Trying to find some stories of my father Paul Gosselin. He passed away in 2003 after a long battle with parkinson's. I don't know when he served on the ship or what rank he was when he was serving. Comments: Crab legs & Steak WOW! I can't imagine seeing a menu like that on Coral Sea. We were not known as a good feeder the days I was aboard but I learned to adjust after a good friend told me to quit bitching and be grateful for what we get to eat. Some of the menus will always stick with me after 58 years.
Friday morning..Baked beans, corn bread, 2 canned figs, powdered milk, coffee, &
dry cereal.....Sunday evening..cold cuts, 2 slices of cheese, bread, potato salad, jello and a cookie, coffee and powdered milk. Very seldom could you get seconds. Unless you had the midnight watch you got 3 meals a day and that was it. We ate in the after mess deck, the chow lines on the hanger deck were always long, sometimes stretching all the way to the fan tail. It was always disheartening to have a early watchstanding chit and be first in line and go below only to see the mess deck full of people.

Comments: THE ANNIVERSARY NEXT MONTH 7 FEBRUARY 2008 WILL BE 43 YEARS SINCE THE U.S.S. CORAL SEA CVA-43 LAUNCHED ANY AIRCRAFT OFF HER DECK AGAINST AN ENEMY OFF THE COAST OF NORTH VIETNAM. HISTORY WAS IN ITS TRUE FORM THAT CRUISE WHEN THE CORAL SEA MADE A 331 DAYS LONG COMBAT WESTPAC CRUISE A RECORD WHICH STILL HOLDS TRUE TODAY. I WAS AN E-2 MESSCOOKING IN TRASH AND GARAGE STANDING IN HANGAR BAY 0NE WITH SOME OF THE MEN IN MY DIVISION V-3 WHEN THE CAPTAIN CAME OVER ON THE 1MC AND SAID, "MEN (PAUSE) MEN I JUST RECEIVED A MESSAGE FROM COMMANDER TASK FORCE 77.5 THAT THE CORAL SEA, HANCOCK AND RANGER WILL RENDEZVOUS IN A DESIGNATED AREA IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA AND MAKE RETALIATORY AIR STRIKES AGAINST THE NORTH VIETNAMESE!" NEEDLESS TO SAY WE ALL WERE SCARED BUT THE CORAL SEA STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE AND SET THE PACE FOR ALL TO FOLLOW. THAT WAS A VERY LONG TIME AGO AND I MADE THE FIRST THREE COMBAT WESTPAC CRUISES ABOARD HER AND CAME BACK ONE MORE TIME ABOARD THE U.S.S. SHANGRI-LA CVS-38 IN 1970 MAKING ME HAVE 528 DAYS ON THE LINE IN VIETNAM ON THREE WESTPACS AND ONE WORLD CRUISE TO VIETNAM. ALL SAILORS HAVE A FAVORITE SHIP WELL MINE WAS THE CORAL SEA AFTER SPENTING NEARLY TEN YEARS ABOARD HER IN TWO TOURS TO ME IT STILL IS THE GREATEST AIRCRAFT CARRIER AFLOAT, PERIOD. SURE SHE IS GONE NOW BUT HER MEMORY WILL FOREVER LAST A LIFE TIME TO ALL THE SAILORS WHO SERVED ABOARD HER. TO ALL THE "AB'S" OUT THERE ON THE HANGAR AND FLIGHT DECKS "KEEP STROKING." WALT THE SALT!!!!!

We will also collect names and addresses of any A & B Division "snipes" from that era as well and compile a list, if any are interested, send the information. I have about 12 A & B Division folks listed already.

Comments: Gentlemen, (I will use that term loosely around here)
As another year passes, we get further away from when we were aboard the great carrier, USS Coral Sea. I made many friends during my tme on her and some I still call friends today. Like EM2 Curtis Monger, EMC(Ret.)James Lindley, EM3 Chuck Root, EMFN John White and EMC(ret.)John Ashley. It's really funny, but the two who went on and made a career of the Navy where the first to yell and bitch about the "LIFERS" who ran the shop and gave them the crap details.
These guys, and many others are a part of my past and some of my fondest memories of growing up and becoming a man.
I wish all my fellow Coral Sea crewmen a Happy and Prosperous 2008.

Fondest regards to E-Division and Engineering!
